Ladies who Ranch
July 1, 2005
Cowgirl up!"- wrangler speak for "toughen up" -
is an oft-heard refrain at Alisal Guest Ranch & Resort's COWGIRL BOOTCAMP, a three-night adventure that is inspiring women to trade their stilettos for spurs and take on the confidence-buildings challenges of life in the Wild West (even though it's located in the central coastal region of California). With a backdrop of a 10,000-acre working cattle ranch and fifty miles of riding trails through Santa Barbara's wine country, the resort is the perfect place for a program that focuses on equestrian culture, from trail riding to roping to shaping your hat the way cowgirls do. It rounds out with tack and boot shopping in nearby Santa Ynez and an in-room fireside massage. On one night, following a gourmet meal at the hotel's Ranch Room, cowgirls hit the dance floor for a rousing line-dancing lesson.
The Alisal's seventy-three spacious, high-ceilinged guest studios and suites are television - and telephone-free, but they offer all the other comforts needed after a day on the trails. The next formal boot camp - more fun than rigorous - begins on October 9. Or stage your own private rodeo; all it takes is a minimum of twenty cowgirls staying in ten rooms.
