Summer Reading
I Was Told There’d Be Cake
By Sloane Crosley
I’m not sure life can get any worse. First, I intend to overcome my jealousy-fueled shame
spiral by facing it head-on: professing my love for this brilliant book of essays by
recommending it here. I’m already over the hilarious, unique flair with which this
“Sloane” person has perfected her prose. I’ve moved past reading about the
book’s sale to HBO to be made into the next “Sex and the City.” And
I’ve even recovered from hearing that the author is A LOT younger than I thought she
was/than I am. So: I Google the book to get the right webpage for the link above and find,
to my utter dispair, that her website, www.sloanecrosley.com,
incorporates DIARAMA miniatures of some of her essays, replete with a video tour and witty
commentary! This woman is beyond. I am left to hurl my own remarks headfirst into the abyss
they call the World Wide Web, though I’m pretty sure in my case, they’ll be read by
a significant few. But hey! You “few”: buy this book – you’ll like it.

Sally’s Summer Sangria
Suffer through the red wine hangover – it’s worth it with this refreshingly kewl party drink!
•
2 bottles red wine (any kind)
½ cup brandy
2 ounces Cointreau
2 cans 7-up
1/2 cup sugar
1 orange, cut into thin (1/4 inch) wedges
1 lemon, cut into thin (1/4 inch) wedges
Ice
•
Pour wine over a handful of ice in the bottom of a large punchbowl. Add sugar, stirring until
it has completely dissolved. Then add Brandy and Cointreau. Then add the fruit slices, stirring
to combine. Let sit for at least an hour, but up to 5 or six, refrigerated. When it’s
time to serve, pour half into a pitcher and add 1 can 7-up (or to taste). Refill as needed with
second half and second 7-up. Serve cold!

Fill-in-the-blank Party Cups
Cute Catherine Sidon never comes to a party empty-handed. Last summer, it was the excellent New
York Times Country Weekends Cookbook, which I loved, and this year, it was these funny cups
that come with a Sharpie to personalize. Mine said: “It’s not a party
‘til______”…with any number of fill-in possibilities. A great hostess gift
and an even greater way to advance conversation from “How was your winter?” and
“When did you get here?” to something more…festive.
Watch it again

Call Starkist! It’s time to watch this 1982 classic again. It’ll inspire you to be
an “idea man,” just like Bill. And sheds new light on the world’s oldest profession.
